Rachel and Ryan
When 19-year-old Rachel came to MountainStar with 5 month-old Ryan, she was living in a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Her alcoholic husband was in jail for violence in front of their son. Rachel, recently moved to Bend, had few places to turn for support. Rachel had not completed high school, but having been raised by an alcoholic father herself, she knew she wanted a better life for her son. Unfortunately, with unstable housing, no employment, unreliable transportation and the constant fear of her abusive spouse, Rachel was finding it difficult to provide a healthy growing environment for Ryan.
After enrolling in our program, Ryan was able to attend our therapeutic classes and Rachel learned how to utilize our extensive network of resources. MountainStar helped Rachel get her car repaired, allowing her to maintain full time employment and transport Ryan to and from his high quality daycare. She was also able to obtain a housing voucher and secured a clean, safe apartment. With the assistance and support of MountainStar interventionists, she filed for divorce from her husband and began work on attaining her GED. MountainStar connected Rachel with the resources that empowered her to successfully pursue her goal: Ryan is blossoming into an active, intelligent infant with a bright future.
